June 7 is rapidly approaching. Use this public forum to discuss the details.

    My first questions:

What resources will we have? (PA? Mics? Extra guitar amps? Keyboard?)

How much time will we have?

Who is the drummer, since both Keith and Perry will be there?

    Semi-response to my own questions:

Looks like we’ll be bringing a keyboard and two guitar amps. One of the amps is my old Kustom that occasionally makes loud random noises, but less so if it warms up for a while.

    Bruce….the date is Sunday, June 8th, fyi….
Did you give my brother Dave this forum?
As for time. The last time we did this, how long did we take? About an hour or so?

  4. brhodewalt said,

Yes, I wrote to David. Yes, I think it was about an hour last time.

Hi Bruce! How are concert plans coming along?

  6. brhodewalt said,

Haven’t done a thing. I’ll try to get some set lists together. I think Keith and I will be taking a separate car and carrying down drums, guitar/amps, and keyboard.

OK! By the way, we have a little something for Keith!

Keith and I jammed a bit tonight. We played the following:

    I Wanna Be Sedated
    Bad Moon Rising
    Bitchen Party (Lopez Beatles)

There were also a couple T.Rex songs that just did not work due to my rhythmic limitations.

    Hi Everyone,

I can bring what will pass as a vocal PA and some mics (as long as the guitar amps & drums aren’t too loud). Still trying to avoid playing bass so I can jam on guitar and not have to bring as much equipment — Elaine, do any of your kids friends play bass? (Send out a feeler and let me know and we can forward a set list for them) I’ll remain flexible on that. Here are some more easy songs for you guys – I do all these in my band so pick the ones you like and I can be ready — just let me know if advance:

Bad to the Bone – Thoroughgood – Riff: GG C Bb G (I can sing this)
    Honky Tonk Woman In G
    Ring of Fire G C G D (repeat) Chorus: D C G (x2) G C G D
Folsom Prison Blues G C G D7 C7 (I can play harmonica on this too)
Feeling Alright (Joe Cocker – Dave Mason) C7 F7
    Stand by Me G Em C D
    Blitzkreig Bop A D E A D A D A D A D B D E
    Dead Flowers D A G prechorus: A D (x2) chorus: G D (x3) A G D
    That’s Alright Mama A(12 Bars) A7(4) D(8) E7(8) A(4)

I’m up for any blues songs on harp – do you know Roadhouse Blues by the Doors?? Great song and I have the harp part down This is in E7 with a little change at the end of the Chorus (let it roll…all night long B7 C7 B7 etc.)
    Or I Got my Mojo Workig (1-4-5 blues) E A B

    More songs with harp:

    Heart of Gold — Neil Young Int: Em D V:Em C D G Ch: Em C D G C
Mary Jane’s last Dance – Tom Petty
    Piano Man??
    Other ideas??

Oh, also, I like your idea (Dave) of doing some DJ stuff…and Sean Farias plays bass. He’s the guy who played with you last time. Don’t think Daniel’s picked up a guitar since then, so don’t count on him at all! But Perry might want to sit in on a few songs. Will Keith relinquish his drums, do you think?

  11. brhodewalt said,

    Song idea!

    Go here:

In the verse, use an appropriate list of who will be there: lots of people, Cousin Amelia, Uncle David, Leah’s friends, Daniel’s friends, etc.

In the chorus, replace the words “Lopez Beatles” with “Leah and Daniel” and replace “Bitchen Party” with “Graduation Party.” It will take a bit of syncopation to get the third syllable in “graduation” to arrive on the downbeat (where “bitchen” starts now), but it will sound good! (Alternatively, the first syllable in “graduation” could arrive on the downbeat.) We should be able to work this out on the phone or on the day of.

Bruce. I like your hair! Yes, cute idea….let’s do it!

Keith and I worked hard tonight. I was on guitar, and he was on drums. Either of us could switch to bass, which I think means Perry can play what/when he wants.

    We worked on this:
    Blitzkrieg Bop
    Dead Flowers
    Roadhouse Blues
    Graduation Party*
Words Get Stuck in my Throat*
    Philosophy of the World*
    Wild Fever*
Not Fade Away (in honor of Bo Diddley, and a good blues harp setting)
I Want to Tell You (Beatles “Revolver” LP)

    * Lopez Beatles songs, which you can listen to here:

We’re not wedded to anything. Keep or toss.

This set looks fine — I won’t know about half of them and probably won’t have time to work up those Lopez Beatles songs but I’ll let you guys go for it or maybe I’ll see if a little harp works on those. If you can come out a little early (around 11:00 we could mess with them in the garage on Sunday.) Let me know if I should bring my big PA. It would be great if you could bring a bass amp and bass. Thanks. – Dave

    Few more easy crowd pleasers:

    Brown Eyed Girl — G C G D etc
    Mustang Sally C – F G

Here’s another really cool song if you know it:

    Santa Monica by Everclear — Verse G D C Chorus: C G D C G

I am wildly interested in seeing Keith play drums, but I suppose I can sit in once if he needs a break. PS – Love that youtube “Lopez Beatles” video. You were way ahead of your time!

  17. brhodewalt said,

    June 5, 2008 at 5:48 pm

BEG would be easy. I can sing.

I can back up Mustang Sally and play staccato guitar.

I don’t know Santa Monica. I’ll look it up.

  18. brhodewalt said,

    June 5, 2008 at 5:51 pm

I was planning to get there by 10:00. I’ll bring two amps, a guitar and a bass. I don’t officially have a bass amp. I’ll see about borrowing a big amp that is unofficially residing in our garage right now.

  19. brhodewalt said,

    June 5, 2008 at 10:26 pm

I will be bringing the third amp. 180 watts, I think, with lots of knobs and input/outputs. Keith worked on a bunch of bass parts tonight.

    Bruce and Dave,

Just a word in edgewise here….I mentioned this to Dave but neglected to include Bruce (sorry)…as far as timing goes, I’m hoping to enjoy “family” time from noon until mid-afternoon, at which point I’ve sent out invites to some neighbors and friends to join us for cake and live music starting at 4:00. I hope that’s OK time-wise for you, Bruce? Dave said it was OK, as long as we can let him watch the Laker game at our place later that evening if he wants. If you all play for an hour or so and then pack up, maybe everyone can be on their way home by 6y:30 or so?

It’s fine for you all to arrive early but just a heads-up –Perry and I will be dashing about picking things up from Costco and local market right about then. But at least 2 kids will be here and the doors will be open, and I’ll have coffee.

Dave were you going to set up a DJ sort of thing? I can’t remember what you said.

    See you Sunday.

  21. brhodewalt said,

    June 6, 2008 at 1:01 pm

I was under the impression that we were playing at noon. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention. I think that’s fine. We work the next day, but everything is sort of on autopilot now.

I am a little concerned about Perry’s availability. I know he’s the host and all, but if he’s joining us on drums for more than a song or two, it would help us if we could have an hour to rehearse. Can you spare him from 10:30-11:30 and have other drivers (Daniel, Leah, Amelia) drive in his place?

  22. Elaine said,

    June 6, 2008 at 3:29 pm

OK, you can have Perry if I can have 4:00.

Yes, the idea was to have family lunch, just us (there’s about 23 of us all told), and then to open up the time to friends and neighbors (unfortunately our tight budget can’t handle feeding the neighborhood). Plus the fact that it might cool down some in the later part of the day. Sorry I didn’t communicate that earlier. I meant to but forgot. Hope that’s OK with the rest of your family? People can leave whenever they want if they have to get back earlier–you’ll have two cars, right?

  23. Perry said,

I am doing all my errands before 10:00 am Sunday. I will be available for practice and set up. Perhaps we would want to practice in the garage like last time? Elaine has some ideas about how to set up the band for the concert at 4:00pm.
